Nope, not a reference to the Red Sox or Fenway. This what Connor has named Stephen's newest accessory. His very first cast, from his hand to his armpit, is a beautiful shade of green. The Irish in me is happy with that aspect of the cast. No other part of me is happy in the least.
I realize that the injury could be much worse. He IS in his mid-thirties, playing soccer like a mad man. We have seen far more severe injuries on the field than this, but I have not had to deal with those injuries on a day to day basis.
For those of you that know Stephen well, he is a fairly tough guy. Pain doesn't really bother him, but being sick and/or incapacitated sure as heck does. This break has him feeling like he is both. He got the cast yesterday afternoon, and so far we have realized that he doesn't sleep well and that he cannot tie his shoes. We don't think he'll be able to help bathe the kids, and he cannot change Avery's diapers or dress him. We were planning on installing a new door next week, but guess that will wait. He cannot make the bed, and we think that driving will be a challenge. I think what bothers him more than anything I have already mentioned is that he has to take a hiatus from his beloved soccer.
There is one bright side. He got a waterproof cast, so he can shower semi-normally.
It's gonna be a long six to twelve weeks.
